Dystrup thanked Mokena trustees for the resolution they adopted last month reaffirming their support for Interstate Highway 355’s extension linking Interstate Highway 55 in Bolingbrook to Interstate Highway 80 in New Lenox.
Dystrup, representing the Southern Alliance for the Extension, a coalition of citizens, builders, real estate dealers and other trades and business people, asked trustees to join in pressing for construction of the extension. Dystrup said the link is essential to the southwest region’s economic development.
Opponents of the highway project, who sued to stop the project and forced a re-examination of its environmental impact, contend the proposed extension would damage the landscape and promote urban sprawl.
Many southwest communities, including New Lenox and Joliet as well as Lockport, have expressed support for the proposed highway.
