One swimmer who has retired to take up dry-land pursuits continues to add to her stash of honors. Rockford native and University of Illinois graduate student Lisa Ann Coole will be one of eight student-athletes recognized at the NCAA’s annual awards banquet Sunday, in a group that includes Michigan quarterback Brian Griese and Heisman Trophy runner-up Peyton Manning of Tennessee.

Coole, who is studying veterinary medicine at Illinois, was a two-time NCAA champion at Georgia and a five-time state champion at Rockford Guilford High School. She was named 1997 NCAA Woman of the Year.
