Richard Shindell

Reunion Hill (Shanachie) (star) (star) (star)

While most of the noise in the contemporary folk movement lately has been made by women artists, there are more than a few male singer-songwriters out there on the coffeehouse circuit who are deserving of wider attention. Joan Baez covers three of Shindell’s songs on her new album, and Dar Williams already has done his “Nora,” so he might not be a complete mystery to folk enthusiasts. An eloquent storyteller and lyrical musician, Shindell fills the imagination with his moving stories of a Civil War widow in the title cut and a lonesome trucker in “The Next Best Western,” and he also offers empassioned covers of Jesse Colin Young’s “Darkness, Darkness,” Townes Van Zandt’s “I’ll Be Here in the Morning” and Merle Haggard’s “Sing Me Back Home.”
