Lincoln-Way High School District officials will learn by March 6 whether their proposed expansion project meets guidelines for state funds, but they will not know how much money will be available until later in the year, Supt. Lawrence Wyllie said Thursday night. One criteria for eligibility is alleviating overcrowding, Wyllie said.

“It’s important to remember that we’re only entitled to the money if the referendum (issue) passes,” said board member Bob Hoaglund.

The referendum scheduled for March 17 will ask voters to approve a $60 million bond issue to finance expansion of the rapidly growing school district.

The expansion project, which school officials say is needed to accommodate the Lincoln-Way district’s skyrocketing residential growth, includes enlarging and remodeling the freshman-sophomore East Campus in Frankfort and the junior-senior Central Campus in New Lenox into separate four-year high schools.
