We almost missed the boat when it came to seeing “Titanic.” After all, we’d seen “Poseidon Adventure” when we were way-little kids, and nothing beats a ship that flips upside down! But after the gushing praise our Flickwatchers rushed to give “Titanic,” we decided we’d better get on deck and check it out. And boy did this movie float our boat! (Which, now that we think of it, is more than we can say for the guys who built the Titanic.) This movie has something for everyone. Do you adore romance? The against-all-odds love that grows between Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) is sweet, even steamy, without being icky-sappy. Wild for adventure? Watching scads of sinking people trying to save others or merely their own skin – is totally heart-pounding. Are you into chick flicks? Rose will be your kind of woman, whether she’s sweetly smooching Jack or wading through rushing water wielding an ax to free her man! Need a little laugh? While life is still calm aboard the mighty ship, Jack teaches new acquaintance Rose to hawk a mean loogie – a talent that comes in handy down the way. As for you special-effects fanatics, watching this great hulk of a ship slowly sink, then break in half and plunge into the icy depths, is both horrifying and fascinating. And for the most part, those poor people aboard the ship, both the brave souls and the cowards, don’t go quietly.
So no matter what kind of movie makes a splash with you, you’ll find it in “Titanic.” And if you’re looking for a great way to amuse yourself on a drab winter day, this flick will be a lifesaver.
Finally, the movie soundtrack is hauntingly lovely; Celine Dion sings like a dream. But move fast – the CDs are selling out all over!
