Maine East High School students far exceeded last year’s record for canned-food collection, gathering up more than 9,000 food items this December for the Chicago-based Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly.
In addition to donating food, which represents nearly half the charity’s annual total in food collections, the school raised $850 for Little Brothers to buy fresh staples throughout the year.
“I tell them each year that about 125 people will have something good to eat every month because of their gift,” said Little Brothers executive director Tina Stretch.
Stretch annually visits the Park Ridge school to “do a dog and pony show” and remind the students of the special needs of the elderly.
Apparently, students got the message.
