If St. Patrick was going to be dethroned as champions of the Elgin Holiday Tournament, coach Mike Bailey couldn’t have picked a better successor.
Fourth-ranked Elgin (13-0), on the strength of 27 points from Sean Harrington, cruised past St. Patrick 55-34 Saturday night to claim its second tournament title in the last three years. For Bailey, it meant losing to his mentor, Elgin coach Jim Harrington.
“I’m happy for Jim and for all of his players,” said Bailey, who served as an assistant at Elgin under Harrington. “(Elgin) has a quality program. But does it make it any easier? No. Losing is losing.”
Sean Harrington scored all nine of the Maroons’ points in the first quarter, which ended with Elgin ahead 9-4. Trailing 12-11 with 5 minutes left in the first half, the Maroons went on a 13-3 run to close the half. Harrington had eight of the 13 points.
“It’s a great feeling to see what he does on the floor,” said the elder Harrington of his son, who averaged 22.7 points a game during the tournament. “You dream of a situation like this.”
Harrington finished the night 9 for 13 from the floor, including 3 for 4 from three-point range.
