The city will consider helping a local auto dealer foot some of the cost of his business expansion, officials said.

Members of the City Council’s Finance Committee will decide next month whether a request to give Bill Callas–who owns Elmhurst Dodge and the biggest used-car dealership in the state–a sales-tax rebate to help subsidize the cost of building a $4.4 million, supersized used-car dealership on 5 acres at 331 W. Grand Ave.

Under the plan, the city would rebate half of its share of sales tax over a seven-year period to the dealership up to a maximum of $600,000.

Callas has projected an annual $20 million in sales at the new Elmhurst Auto Mall, producing about $200,000 a year in sales tax revenue for the city.
