Even when they were down 13 points in the first half Tuesday night, Glenbrook South’s fourth-ranked Titans didn’t worry. In the end, there was no reason to.

The Titans (14-0) overcame the deficit and held off determined Palatine (7-6) for a 48-44 quarterfinal victory at the Wheaton North tournament.

Diana Vardijan led Glenbrook with 14 points and Brett Leonard added 13. Palatine, which led 29-16 with 3 minutes remaining in the first half, was led by 6-foot-4-inch Karen Hagberg with 24 points.

The Titans took the lead for good with 6:31 remaining on a basket by Vardijan.

“That’s the most we’ve been down this year, but there was never any panic,” said Glenbrook South coach Howard Romanek. “The kids are confident they can come back.”

In another top matchup at Wheaton North, Katie Meyers scored 24 points and Jamie Barnish added 19 and grabbed 10 rebounds to give No. 16 Lyons Township (11-2) the victory over Waubonsie Valley 73-66. Ashley Luke had 23 points for Waubonsie (10-4).

Barnish’s free-throw shooting (9 for 10) was key in keeping the Lions in the game. “She’s our best free-throw shooter,” coach Dawn Schabacker said. “I kept seeing Jamie Barnish on the line and I felt real good about it.”

Other games at Wheaton North: Laura Barnard led No. 17 Hinsdale Central (11-2) with 16 points, going 9 for 11 from the free-throw line, to cruise pass Willowbrook 48-34. Hinsdale opened the first quarter with a 13-0 run but scored only three baskets in the second half. Linia Bracker had 15 for Willowbrook (7-6). . . . Cindy McGinnis scored 13 points and had five steals to lead No. 15 West Aurora over Elgin 47-32. The Blackhawks (12-2) held Elgin scoreless for the first 6 minutes of the second quarter. . . . In consolation play, Kristen Stewart led Schaumburg (8-4) with 16 points in a 47-29 rout of Downers Grove North (1-11). . . . Wheaton North (1-10), behind Jodie Baker’s 14 points (12 on three-pointers), defeated Nazareth 54-45. Joanna Bukovsky had 18 for Nazareth (11-2). . . . St. Charles (4-10), getting 15 points from Molly Jones, defeated Glenbard North 52-38. Melissa Oliver had 12 points for Glenbard North (3-8).

Benet/Naperville North: Lauren Cramer poured in 25 points and scored all six of Providence’s points in overtime as the Celtics edged Joliet 63-61. Providence (8-7) trailed by two with less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter when Amanda Murphy (15 points) hit a layup to tie the game at 57-57. Mary McNair’s 23 points and Lori Shelby’s 16 paced Joliet (9-6). . . . Mary Ellen Schaeffer’s 16 points helped No. 11 Benet hold off No. 8 Wheaton-Warrenville South 55-51. Benet (13-1) went on an 18-6 run in the third quarter to take the lead for good and withstood a fourth-quarter rally by Wheaton, which got to within 53-49. “In the first half we were tentative, so we put the pressure on and started attacking the basket,” said Benet coach Peter Paul. Charliss Ridley had 16 points for Wheaton South (12-2).

Kristi Faulkner scored eight of her team’s nine overtime points in Glenbard West’s 45-41 decision over Naperville North (2-13). Faulkner had 24 points for the Hilltoppers (10-3), who will advance to the championship round Dec. 29 at Benet.

Machesney Park Harlem: No 13 Conant (13-0) played two games Tuesday and won both. First the Cougars knocked off Stillman Valley 61-51 behind 15 points each from Jennifer Pettyjohn and Sheryl Jedd. Then the Cougars blitzed Rockford East 62-19.

Maine East/Niles North: Amanda Evans’ 20 points and Latoya Howell’s 11 pushed Zion-Benton (3-9) past Highland Park 55-44. . . . Lake Park (6-9) downed Maine East 39-24 behind Carlin Chesick’s 15 points. . . . Lagina Dobbs’ 14 points led Oak Park to a 45-28 victory over Highland Park. Tracey Schreider added 11 for Oak Park. . . . Maine East defeated Zion-Benton 56-40 as Joanna Karlos (15 points), Nicole Haslett (14) and Tonia Lymperopolous (13) led the way. Talbert then had 12 more points as the Vikings routed Madonna 42-25. . . . Mather, in its second game, edged Mt. Assisi 43-39 as Veronica Martinez and Sandy Escorcia had 10 points apiece.

Mother Guerin: Luther North (10-4), with the help of 16 points from Healy Thompson , prevailed against Mother Guerin 60-50. . . . Notre Dame (2-10) rolled past Lourdes 40-27 behind 15 points from Vilmary Morales. Gina Plastiak had 13 for Lourdes (8-7). . . . Rachel Porter scored 19 points and Salena Patitucci 16 to help Curie (11-6) edge Good Counsel 56-51. Bridget Carlson put up a game-high 20 points for Good Counsel (11-2). . . . Debbie Miller had 16 points and Jennifer Beltran 15 for St. Scholastica (2-10) to hold off Elmwood Park 53-49. Fran Campobasso had 16 in defeat.

St. Ignatius: Stacey Tassin scored 15 points and Uletta Jackson 12 as Thornridge defeated Regina 43-38. Kathleen Mitchell paced Regina Dominican with 15. . . .
