Darien will expand its auxiliary police force next month to enhance city safety, officials said.

Already 15 members strong, police are looking to expand the unpaid auxiliary force by an additional 10 members. Applicants should have strong communication skills and must have been Darien residents for at least one year, at least 21, in good physical condition and pass a criminal background check.

Although they have the authority to make arrests, auxiliary officers don’t carry guns and “are not really put into that role,” said Darien Sgt. Ron Campo.

Members will not only help sworn officers with traffic control but will also assist with house and vehicle lockouts, animal complaints, code violations, some patrol and booking duties and prisoner transport, Campo noted.

Anyone interested is invited to attend an orientation meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at the police department, 1710 Plainfield Rd. For more information, call 630-971-3999.
