The extra mile: Speaking of gifts, members of North Shore School District 112’s Education Foundation board in Highland Park offer a suggestion for the tough-to-shop-for people on your holiday list: airline miles. A $150 donation to the foundation will buy 500 American Airlines AAdvantage miles, $250 equals 1,000 miles, $500 obtains 2,500 miles and so forth.

Foundation funds go to such district programs as summer school for at-risk and remedial students and Teacher Opportunity Grants, which allow staff members to expand their knowledge, particularly in science and computer technology.
