Lipstick Lies & Gasoline (Razor & Tie) (star) (star) (star)
This Ontario export’s high-octane blend of folk, country and blues is rendered with raw passion and swagger. As the album title suggests, Eaglesmith’s songs deal with some of the harsher realities of life on the road, including alcoholism, gun lust and romantic entanglements with supercharged automobiles. Especially haunting is Eaglesmith’s duet with Lynn Miles, “Drinking,” which describes a lover’s descent into substance abuse, a subject revisted on “Alcohol and Pills.” Eaglesmith may hail from Canada, but he seems to have been schooled in Texas — passing with flying colors.
