Though Naperville North was 1-9 to start the week, Fenwick coach Dave Power wasn’t about to take his team’s non-conference opponent lightly for a simple reason: In six seasons, his Friars couldn’t beat the Huskies in Naperville.
But No. 3 Fenwick put an end to that streak–barely–Tuesday. Though they made just 36 percent of their shots and 18 of 30 free throws, the Friars pulled out a 50-41 victory over host Naperville North (1-10).
“We typically don’t shoot well here, and some of that has to do with Naperville North’s defense,” Power said. “But in the fourth quarter, we finally established a lead that I felt comfortable with.”
Fenwick (8-1) led 33-31 to start the fourth quarter. Though the Friars struggled from the free-throw line most of the game, they connected down the stretch to pull away. They hit five of six to extend their lead to 44-34. Katie O’Grady (24 points) hit four of the five.
