Trustees have voted to raise the town’s business license fees.

The fee schedule was changed after a survey of business license costs in neighboring towns, Village Manager Jim Smithberg said last week, noting that Romeoville’s fees were considerably lower than many towns’.

The increase is intended to match charges in other towns and to cover the costs associated with licensing businesses, Smithberg said.

With the new schedule enacted and due to go into effect for 1998, “Our fees are not above what other municipalities charge,” he said.

Inspections, especially of businesses like hotels, are costly and “very labor-intensive,” he said.
