Opponents are lining up against it, but the Cook Memorial Library District will stick with its plan to ask voters in March for up to $19.9 million to construct a new library in Vernon Hills and renovate the current library building in downtown Libertyville.
Joe Bean, president of the Library Board, said the district won’t be deterred by some taxpayers’ negative reactions to the proposed referendum question at two public hearings this week.
“I don’t think any of us thought this would be an easy thing to do,” he said.
The district held meetings Monday in Vernon Hills and Tuesday in Libertyville.
The next step is for library trustees to meet Jan. 8 to adopt the final wording of the referendum proposal. They must submit it to Lake County by mid-January for the measure to qualify for the March 17 election.
