Police will erect a roadside checkpoint in Downers Grove this weekend in an effort to crack down on drunken drivers, officials said Wednesday night.

The checkpoint’s location will remain unannounced so police can head off drivers who are impaired, but Police Sgt. Tim Gunn said it will be “connected at a time and location to provide maximum opportunity for the detection and apprehension of motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.”

Police staffing the checkpoint also will be on the alert for drivers who have no insurance, are without a license or are operating an unsafe vehicle. Police said they will also make certain occupants of all vehicles are wearing safety belts.

Officials said they realize that many drivers get irritated when traffic slows down because of checkpoints, but they said the steps are necessary to keep impaired drivers off the road. Anyone with questions can call police at 630-434-5636.
