Film Noir (Arista) (star) (star) (star)

As a thematic enterprise, “Film Noir” requires a liberal interpretation of the genre’s canon, but Carly Simon’s stylish warbling and the lush orchestrations more than make up for a few loose threads. Gentle surprises, like Simon turning Cole Porter’s “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” on its head by injecting a Caribbean flavor, provide the frills, but it is her golden voice that lends substance to the romantic fare, such as the standard “Laura” (with a Simon-crafted introduction subtitled “Haunting”) and “Lili Marlene.” A duet with John Travolta on “Two Sleepy People” (the tune is cloyingly sweet) is overshadowed by the beautiful “Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year” with songwriter extraordinaire Jimmy Webb.
