Avid DZ readers knowK we have a soft spot for Chinese and Latin cuisines, so naturally we go wild for Filipino dumplings, which use elements of both. This is deliciously clear at Mom’s Bake Shoppe & Restaurant, where the dumpling case features empanadas (a frequent DZ guest) and siopao (a sibling of the Chinese pork bun, char siu bao). And while the turnover-like empanada and the steamed yeast bun-ish siopao take their cues from very different parts of the world, Mom’s unites them with a Filipino barbecued pork filling (the empanada version of this treat has raisins in it too). Other goodies to look for at Mom’s are the meat rolls, the egg-rollish lumpia and a wonderful purple yam pudding called ube jalea.
