An 83-year-old man was killed early Wednesday when his car spun out of control and hit a utility pole, police said.

Charles Becker, of the 9000 block of South Cicero Avenue, was driving westbound in the 5500 block of West 87th Street in Oak Lawn at 2:55 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle, said Oak Lawn Police Lt. Bob Smith. The car crossed the median and struck an eastbound vehicle before slamming into a utility pole, knocking it down, Smith said.

Becker was pronounced dead at 3:22 a.m. in Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

No one was injured in the second vehicle, Smith said.

Relatives told police that it was not uncommon for Becker to go for a drive in the early hours.

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
