Park commissioners Tuesday night scrapped a plan to take over the Cherry Hill School building next year.
Park Director Bill McCollum said District 122’s insistence that the Park District buy and renovate the building and pay to re-engineer construction make the project “undoable.”
Since the space-starved Park District will not buy the building on Washington Street, the school likely will be demolished when a new kindergarten center is built on the site next year. School board officials say life-safety and water-detention requirements make it more economically feasible to tear it down.
Park Commissioner Phil Landry said the New Lenox Public Library is outgrowing its building on Cedar Road and looking for new quarters. The library building, which is adjacent to the district’s Lion’s Den Park, would be a good location for Park District facilities, he said.
