By the time Mary Cain becomes a senior, opposing coaches weary of trying to figure out ways to stop the Maria sophomore will eagerly be awaiting her graduation.

Cain had 27 points, including 12 in the third quarter, as Maria prevailed against Fremd 62-56 Tuesday in Palatine.

“She doesn’t play like a sophomore,” Maria coach Rick Federici said of Cain, who is in her second year on the varsity squad. “She has been involved in some pressure games for us already and has come through real well.”

Maria (10-1) trailed 29-28 at the half but went on a 14-2 run midway through the third quarter to take a 44-35 lead. Cain had eight points during the rally. Fremd (6-3) cut the lead to 51-49 during the fourth, but Maria pulled away with 10 unanswered points. The run was capped by Margoth Rodriguez’s two free throws with 53 seconds left.

Nina Solava added 11 points for Maria. Fremd was led by Maggie Fontana’s 16.

Maine West 49, Niles North 30: Dawn Vana’s 12 points sparked No. 5 Maine West (10-0, 1-0) in the Central Suburban North. Niles North (3-5, 0-2) was led by Lindsey Talbert’s 10 points.

Sandburg 47, Thornwood 21: No. 7 Sandburg (8-1) rolled behind Jill Keresztes (12 points) and Sarah Kustok (11).

Lake Zurich 64, Cary-Grove 37: No. 9 Lake Zurich (9-1) cruised in the Fox Valley behind Alicia Ratay’s 21 points. Liz Malman scored 14 for Cary-Grove (6-3, 3-2).

Maine South 67, Glenbrook North 23: No. 10 Maine South (8-1, 2-0) dominated the Central Suburban South game behind Denise Pavichevich (18 points) and Vicki Manko (10). Glenbrook North fell to 5-4, 1-1.

Dundee-Crown 63, McHenry 47: Billee Russell had 19 points and Bridgett Voltl added 15 to lead the 14th-ranked Chargers (8-1, 4-1) past McHenry (5-4, 3-2) in the Fox Valley.

Glenbard West 67, Downers Grove North 24: No. 16 Glenbard West improved to 6-2.

Chicago Christian 40, Luther South 37: Tara Stuursma had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Chicago Christian (5-3, 1-2) in the Private School League. Janet Henry led Luther South (6-2, 1-2) with 17 points.

Curie 61, Lindblom 32: Curie (5-4, 1-0) cruised in the Public Red Central behind Selina Tatitucci’s 24 points.

Evanston 87, Maine East 37: Tanara Golston’s 17 points paced Evanston (6-2, 1-0 Central Suburban South). Kris Budzinski had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Maine East (0-8, 0-2).

Francis Parker 67, Willows 27: Francis Parker (7-1, 2-1) won in the Independent School League with Lizzie Kaplan’s 14 points.

Grayslake 47, Woodstock 34: In the Fox Valley, Grayslake (7-2, 3-2) won behind Jenny Wessel’s 15 points.

Hoffman Estates 55, St. Viator 47: Shannon Bree tallied 26 points for Hoffman Estates (5-3). Jennifer Ansani led St. Viator (5-3) with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Hinsdale South 57, Glenbard East 45: Becky Kostal scored 18 for Hinsdale South (6-1).

Homewood-Flossmoor 56, Plainfield 18: The Vikings (6-2) cruised on the strength of Megan Bramlette’s 14 points and Tami Barrowes’ 10.

Lane Tech 37, Von Steuben 34: Natalie Tondelli’s 13 points helped Lane prevail. Janice Thompson’s 14 led Von Steuben (4-1).

Lockport 53, Oak Forest 34: Trisha Jakel scored 23 to lead Lockport (7-1).

Lourdes 68, Juarez 36: Eman Davis led four in double figures with 12 points and six steals for Lourdes (8-2).

Luther North 40, Wheaton Academy 39: Jennifer Lemke (15 points) hit a free throw with one second left to complete a three-point play and give Luther North (6-2, 2-1) the Private School League victory. Wheaton is 4-5, 2-1.

Lyons Township 57, Oak Park 40: Lyons (6-1, 2-1), which was led by Allison Clark (15 points) and Katie Meyers (14), led 33-8 at the half and rolled. Oak Park (2-6, 0-3 West Suburban Silver) was led by Jasmine Turner’s 12 points.

Minooka 60, Lincoln-Way 53: Jennifer Kirinchich’s double-double–17 points and 17 rebounds–paced Minooka (6-1).

Palatine 58, Lake Park 43: Gina Ferrara hit nine of 14 shots en route to 21 points for Palatine (5-3). Lake Park slipped to 2-7.

Phillips 52, King 31: Catrina Bush totaled 20 points, nine steals and seven rebounds for Phillips (5-1). Patricia Wansley added 11 points, 18 rebounds, 11 assists and nine steals for the victors.

Providence-St. Mel 62, St. Gregory 34: Monique Gregg-Thomas scored 14 for St. Mel (5-1, 3-0 Chicago Prep).

Resurrection 41, Barrington 29: Andrea Mendyk had 13 points and Libby Colen 12 points and nine rebounds for Resurrection (6-3). Barrington is 1-7.

Roosevelt 92, Lincoln Park 44: Lashawn Taylor (36 points), Lenita Hinkle (24) and Kristy Schnieder (23) led Roosevelt. Liane Lucans had 23 for Lincoln Park.

Taft 39, Steinmetz 25: Latasha White scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Taft (6-1, 1-0) in the Public Red North.

Timothy Christian 56, Walther Lutheran 47: Kellie Carwell scored 17 of her 31 points in the third quarter and Rachel Boerema added 19 points to carry Timothy Christian (3-4, 1-2) in the Private School League. Tiffany Green led Walther Lutheran with 23 points, including 18 on three-pointers.

Wauconda 53, Union Grove (Wis.) 28: Kelly Sena’s 16 points and Kris Schulz’s 14 led Wauconda (6-2).

Waukegan 63, Niles West 53: Kenja White scored 27 and LaQuitla Evans 16 to power Waukegan (4-5, 1-0) in the Central Suburban South.

Wheeling 73, Prospect 61: TeShauna Conrad’s 31 points led Wheeling (2-6), which won its first game over a Mid-Suburban League opponent in nine years.

Yorkville 75, Rosary 44: Christy Vridge scored 26 points and Molly Erickson had 13 for Yorkville (5-2).
