A $2 million bond has been set for a Waukegan man who was charged over the weekend with raping a 16-year-old girl at knifepoint in her home last month.
Jeronimo Mendez, 18, of 108 S. Sheridan Rd., was charged Saturday with aggravated criminal sexual assault and home invasion.
He allegedly broke into a Waukegan home in the early morning hours of Nov. 23, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and then raped a 16-year-old girl, police said.
The girl, who lived with an uncle, was sleeping when she heard a knock at the door and went to answer it. That’s when the suspect forced his way in, police said.
According to prosecutors, Mendez was on probation for a weapons charge on the night of the alleged rape. He is being held under a $2 million cash bond in the Lake County Jail pending a Dec. 18 hearing.
