Population growth points up the need for New Lenox Township’s newly formed Family Services Commission, Supervisor Guy Sell told the Township Board recently.

With more people moving into the village and township, the needs of the people are changing, he said, noting that family-oriented organizations may be able to “head off” the youth problems that families may have left other areas to escape.

The movement of population growth outward from the Chicago area and its nearby suburbs is becoming more and more evident, he said.

The Family Services Commission is planning a health fair in the spring, probably in May, Commissioner Mike Hickey said.

In another growth-related matter, Commissioner Russ Loverude said he is concerned that the Heritage Corridor Planning Council’s endorsement of the proposed linkup of Interstate Highways 355 and 80 may pave the way for another local planning group, the Lincoln-Way Regional Planning Council, to endorse the extension of that roadway farther south to Interstate Highway 57.

The purpose of regional planning councils is to study land use, not promote highways, Loverude said.
