Most freshmen spend their first season watching and learning, patiently waiting for their time to shine. But most freshmen don’t have Maggie Fontana’s skills.
Fontana had a remarkable all-around game in leading Fremd to a 46-31 victory over Regina Dominican Saturday in Wilmette. The forward totaled 18 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, seven steals and four blocks.
“She works very hard every day in practice and worked with us all summer,” Fremd coach Carol Plodzien said. “She’s made great strides just because of her work ethic.”
Lynell Davis added 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks and combined with Fontana to control the lane, helping Fremd (6-2) to a 29-15 rebounding advantage.
Regina (5-6) hung close through the third quarter, thanks mostly to the outside shooting of Jackie Corrado and junior Kathleen Mitchell. Corrado scored five of her team-hi 10 points in the third period. A three by Mitchell, who also finished with eight points and six steals, brought Regina within five.
But Fontana took the game over from there, getting a three-point play to put Fremd up 31-24 at the end of the third period. She also got a breakaway layup off her own steal to open the fourth, and on the next possession found Davis for an open layup. A layup by Fontana gave Fremd a 14-point lead with just 4 minutes to play.
