A Kane County judge has set an April 6 trial date for Edward L. Tenney, charged with murder in the 1993 shooting death of a 76-year-old Aurora Township woman inside her home. Tenney has been convicted and ruled eligible for the death penalty in the attack on another Aurora Township woman.
Circuit Judge Donald Hudson set the date at the request of Tenney’s attorneys, William Glisson and Herbert Hill.
Virginia Johannessen was found dead in her home Jan. 5, 1993. Authorities said they believe she had been killed as many as three days earlier.
Four other men were charged about a year after Johannessen was slain. Three were acquitted, but a jury convicted Lionel Lane, who had begun serving a 60-year prison sentence when Tenney and his cousin Don Lippert were arrested in May 1995 and charged in three homicides. Lane was exonerated.
Authorities said Lippert has confessed to his role in killing Johannessen, Jill Oberweis and 24-year-old Jerry Weber, who was found dead on a roadside in the DuPage County portion of Aurora in 1992. He has testified against his cousin in the Oberweis trial.
In October, a Kane County jury convicted Tenney, 38, of killing Oberweis inside her home a few doors from where Johannessen lived on Felton Road.
