The list of leading scorers from Wednesday’s game between fourth-ranked Glenbrook South and No. 10 Maine South won’t include Jovanka Pavlovic–she scored only two points. But without the 5-foot-8-inch senior, Glenbrook South (6-0) may not have pulled out a 47-46 victory to stay undefeated.
After two Glenbrook South turnovers, Maine South had the ball with 14 seconds to play and was trailing by one point. Pavlovic stripped the ball from Kori Bieszczad to preserve the victory.
“She has come through for us when we’ve needed it,” Glenbrook South coach Howard Romanek said of Pavlovic. “There were times last year when she hit a key bucket or made a key steal for us. She did that in a victory over Maine West last year.”
Pavlovic didn’t need to spark the offense in the final minutes–the Titans rely on Brett Leonard for that. Leonard (12 points, six assists) found Susie McCreery (13 points, eight rebounds) for a layup and then put in a layup of her own off a steal by Keagan Thalin to put Glenbrook South up 45-41. After a jumper by Bieszczad (10 points) brought Maine South (6-1) within two, Leonard hit a short bank shot to push Glenbrook’s lead back 47-43 with just over a minute to play.
Maine South, which was led by Denise Pavichevich’s 16 points, had several chances to win in the final moments. A three-pointer by Sarah Cohen with a minute remaining, her only points of the game, cut Glenbrook’s lead to 47-46, but South came no closer.
