New Trier coach Rick Malnati believed his team could handle the rebounding battle with ninth-ranked Maine West Tuesday night in Winnetka.
This despite the presence of Maine West’s Lucas Johnson and Kevin Frey, both 6-foot-7-inches. Malnati countered with 6-2 Boden Smart and 6-4 Todd Markman. In the end, though, Smart and Markman combined for 17 rebounds and held Johnson and Frey to just 12 as the Trevians walked away with a 60-57 victory.
Matt Lottich led the Trevians with 22 points, including four free throws in the final minute. Markman added 16 points and eight rebounds. Smart only had two points, but contributed nine rebounds, five of them offensive.
Johnson led Maine West with 26 points, including six three-pointers, and five rebounds, while Frey added 11 points. For the game, New Trier out-rebounded the Warriors 30-18.
Maine West led 38-36 late in the third quarter, but New Trier went on a 14-3 run to close the third and open the fourth and the Warriors couldn’t get closer than four until a layup as time expired accounted for the final margin.
