Park officials want to know if they have a chance of saving Cherry Hill School from the wrecking ball before they shell out money to study renovation costs, New Lenox Park Board President Tom Lewis said recently.
The school building at 2800 Washington St., where a kindergarten center for New Lenox Elementary School District 122 is being built, is slated for demolition at the end of the school year.
The Park District, which is searching for more space for programs to serve a growing population, could find a number of uses for the school, Commissioner Cheryl Mison said.
Park Director Bill McCollum, who wrote to the school board in September, said he has not received a written reply.
According to Park Commissioner Phil Landry, school board members want to be sure a new building plan that eliminates demolition of the school building will permit them enough space for storm water detention.
The school board, which had planned to enlarge the school, said costly remodeling needs and increased drainage requirements forced their change in plans.
