Zion-Benton’s Quiande Moore had no trouble finding his rhythm on the opening night of boys basketball.
Moore connected on seven of eight three-point attempts Monday in the Mather tournament and finished with 29 points to lead No. 12 Zion-Benton in a 96-60 rout of Hirsch.
“If he has a big night, it doesn’t surprise me anymore,” Zion-Benton coach Don Kloth said of the 6-foot-2-inch guard who was 10 of 11 from the field.
Darnell Fields added 17 points and Al Lainio 12 points and 10 rebounds for Zion, which outscored Hirsch 33-11 in the third quarter. Hirsch was led by Dennis Harris’ 20 points.
In other action, Mather upended Clemente 83-54 behind Tedrick Rance’s 18 points, and Fenger beat University High 69-62 with Mario Tribette’s 21 points and Keith Hawkins’ 20. Justin Slaughter had 25 for U-High.
Curie tournament: No. 3 King used 32 points, six assists and four steals from Imari Sawyer, 25 points and nine rebounds from Anthony Johnson and 18 points and 14 rebounds from Leon Smith to rout Flower 97-49. . . . Curie used 23 points by Donnie Morgan and 20 by Jermaine Miller to ease past Crane 84-70.
Buffalo Grove tournament: No. 9 Maine West (1-0) used a 9-0 run in the last 2 minutes to contain Buffalo Grove 80-70. Kevin Frey and Lucas Johnson each scored 22 points for the Warriors while Jason Donis had a game-high 24 points for Buffalo Grove (0-1). . . . No. 20 Gordon Tech (1-0) used 21 points from Hodges Smith to upend Crystal Lake South 65-55. Crystal Lake’s Mike Zorica led all players with 25 points.
Larkin tournament: Sean Harrington’s 13 points sparked No. 14 Elgin as it topped Foreman 65-47.
Lincoln-Way tournament: Brett Love had 22 points as Thornwood (1-0) beat Rich Central 59-50. The Thunderbirds converted 19 of 22 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Niles West tournament: Brucal Green (17 points) sank a free throw to complete a three-point play with 30 seconds left as 16th-ranked Proviso West pulled away for a 65-59 victory over Niles West. Jermaine Brown had 23 points and Keith Blake 18 points for Proviso. Niles West’s Steve Kopke scored 23. . . . Eric Schoenecker (11 points) sank five of six free throws in the fourth quarter to lead Notre Dame (1-0) to a 49-39 victory over Libertyville (0-1). . . .
