The city will apply for a state program designed to boost its downtown revitalization efforts, officials said.
Elmhurst City Council members agreed recently to apply for Illinois’ Main Street program, a 4-year-old state-funded program aimed at restoring suburban and rural downtowns through professional and financial assistance. Suburbs already selected for the program include Forest Park, La Grange and Westmont.
Several council members initially expressed reluctance to seek help from the state because Elmhurst’s own revitalization of its downtown has been moving steadily forward. But business owners said they want to take advantage of the state’s free technical assistance and professional services, as well as the opportunity to apply for grant funds.
