When most people think of dim sum, they think of steaming carts rolling around big dining rooms dispensing little dumpling treasures. But for a more intimate experience, we like to hit little Chinese bakeries and tea houses where locals sip endless pots of tea, chat, smoke and enjoy cheaper and often tastier plates of these Chinese tea snacks made to order. These steamy eateries dot Argyle Street in Uptown and Wentworth Avenue in Chinatown; our favorites are both Chiu Quon Bakeries, where you can linger over a $1 pot of tea and a few generous dishes of dim sum for less than $10. Our favorite dumpling on their menu is the delicate steamed shrimp treat called har gow, but on the non-dumpling front, we go nuts for their almond tofu.
