An exhausted Denise Pavichevich, who led Maine South in a victory over No. 20 Stevenson Wednesday, connected on just one of eight shots in the first half Thursday against No. 16 New Trier in the first round of the Buffalo Grove/Maine South tournament.
A rested Pavichevich hit seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 19 points as unranked Maine South (2-0) outlasted No. 16 New Trier 50-44.
“Perhaps my best coaching move tonight was to sit Denise down toward the end and give her a rest,” coach Mike Deines said. “She was just dead out there. She got some rest and came back strong.
“She turned out to be the money player for us in the second half.”
Maine South led by 11 points with 2 minutes 17 seconds left in the third quarter before New Trier rallied. The Trevians outscored South 6-2 to end the period and 8-1 to start the fourth and tied the game at 40 with 4:10 remaining. The Hawks, who led 43-42 with 2:29 left, went on a 5-0 run with four from Pavichevich to lead 48-42 with 56 seconds left. New Trier cut the lead to 48-44 with 12 seconds left but then missed two shots. Pavichevich added two more free throws with 1 second left to seal the victory.
Katie Romey had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Trevians (0-2).
In other tournament action, Christy Compobasso scored a game-high 14 points as Buffalo Grove (2-0) defeated Barrington 55-32. Lyndsey Hamma scored eight first-quarter points for the Bison, which led 17-6 after the first period. . . . Allison Farrington scored 18 points, 12 in the first half, as Libertyville opened its season with a 51-25 victory over Lake Park (0-1).
Schaumburg tournament: No. 4 Glenbrook South (2-0) rolled past St. Charles 79-55 with Brett Leonard’s career-high 29 points and Diana Vardijan’s 14. St. Charles (0-2) was led by Jen Unger’s 16. . . . Alicia Ratay scored 20 of her 28 points in the second half as No. 10 Lake Zurich (3-0) topped Palatine 57-45. Karen Hagberg, who has practiced twice since helping Palatine finish third in the state volleyball finals, scored 23 in defeat for the Pirates (0-2). . . . The host Saxons jumped to 24-3 lead in the first quarter and handled Wheaton North 65-41. Kristen Stewart led Schaumburg with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Emily Nihill scored 16 for Wheaton (0-2).
Maine West 66, Naperville North 41: Dawn Vana and Julie Just led the way for No. 5 Maine West (2-0) with 15 points apiece. After leading 32-20 at the half, the Warriors, fueled by eight points from Amy Stoltz (12 points), outscored Naperville North 23-5 in the third quarter. Naperville North is 0-1.
Mother McAuley 59, Resurrection 41: No. 8 McAuley (1-0) used 16 points by Maggie Moore and 12 by Amy Jones to roll. Resurrection slipped to 1-1.
Waubonsie Valley 74, Streamwood 28: The 11th-ranked Warriors (2-0) rolled behind 17 points from Ashley Luke.
Bolingbrook tournament: Shavonna Hunter scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Nickey Sims added 16 to lead No. 12 Hillcrest (1-0) to a 59-30 victory over Minooka (0-1). . . . Reavis (2-0) downed Bolingbrook 51-31 with Katie Crumpley’s 24 points and Nicole Krutchen’s 15. Rebecca Koehler’s 11 points led Bolingbrook (0-1).
Morgan Park 64, Curie 42: No. 17 Morgan Park (1-0) cruised behind Jasmine Moore (21 points), who hit five three-pointers and had four assists and four steals. Rachel Porter scored 22 for Curie (0-1).
Austin tournament: Led by Camille Calhoun’s 16 points, Sullivan (4-0) topped Austin 57-34 for the title. Calhoun was named most valuable player. Austin is 2-1.
Hersey 46, Regina 21: Hollie Schurr (10 points) converted five of her six steals into breakaway layups and Hersey (1-1) held Regina (1-1) to one third-quarter point in the victory. Sophomore Nicolette McCartney grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots for the Huskies.
Madonna tournament: Taft (1-0) used 26 points and 15 rebounds by Latasha White to upend Lourdes 52-24 in coach Frank Zepf’s debut for Taft. Zepf is the former Resurrection head coach. Lourdes fell to 1-1.
