Support for a referendum proposal to finance expansion of Lincoln-Way High School was sought Thursday night by a gathering of 200 people.
The volunteer steering committee that arranged the meeting said it was seeking additional volunteers for jobs in the campaign, including precinct captains, precinct workers, speakers and general workers.
Steering committee members called upon residents at the gathering to work for approval of the $60 million referendum proposal, which will be on the ballot March 17.
District Supt. Lawrence Wyllie said that the district’s two buildings will reach capacity by 2001 and that growth will continue for years after that.
“It’s a pretty steady growth,” he said.
Wyllie said the building project is needed because the schools will become overcrowded without new facilities.
“If we allow our schools to deteriorate, the value of our property is going to go down hill,” he said.
The proposal would preserve Lincoln-Way’s quality, he said. The money would be used to remodel Lincoln-Way’s East and Central Campuses in New Lenox into four-year schools.
Freshman and sophomores attend classes at the East Campus, and juniors and seniors attend classes at the Central Campus.
