With so much riding on Saturday’s Ohio State-Michigan game, it feels like the 1970s again. But the times, they have a-changed. Woody is gone, and Bo is swapping jokes with his pals in the media a few days before Michigan plays Ohio State.

“I’m not the center of attention here,” Schembechler said. “I’m just here because I’m still alive.”

Schembechler, 68, who has had two heart attacks, works on behalf of the Millie Schembechler Foundation and is still a presence in Michigan athletics.

Asked if he misses coaching, Schembechler said: “I’m smart enough to know I can’t do it anymore. I can coach. But I don’t have the energy” to recruit and deal with alumni and media.

But he still can cheer, and he will on Saturday.

“I have a spot in the press box that’s this wide,” Schembechler said, raising his hands a yard apart. “I have a TV monitor right there. I’ll open up a window and let the air and the sounds all come in. And have one hell of a Saturday afternoon.”
