After rescuing her team in a 56-55 triumph over Hersey, Conant’s Kristy Steffens reflected on her team’s season opener.
“I guess we had the first-game jitters and being down 16 points kind of woke us up,” Steffens said after hitting two free throws to give Conant the victory.
The Cougars struggled against Hersey’s Jenny Dohnal, who scored 24 points, including 18 on three-pointers. Hersey (0-1) was without two players who began practicing this week after helping the volleyball team place fourth in the state tournament last weekend.
The Cougars overcame the 16-point deficit, in part because of an 8-2 run to end the game and Steffens’ heroics. Steffens scored 11 points, Cheryl Jedd added 12 and Michelle Lexow totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds.
