A hotel-motel tax approved by the New Lenox Village Board Tuesday night will not generate quick revenues, but it could boost development.

There are no hotels or motels in New Lenox, but village officials say they expect that to change when Interstate Highway 355 is extended to meet Interstate Highway 80 in New Lenox.

Commercial development and increased business travel are expected to accompany highway expansion.

The measure approved by trustees will add a 5 percent village tax to lodging charges.

Village Administrator Russ Loebe said the money that could be generated from the hotel-motel tax would be earmarked for economic development.

Trustee Patrick Flynn cast the dissenting vote, saying he opposes any new taxes in the village.
