The second of two staff positions created to aid Mokena’s push for economic development was filled this week.

Trustees on Monday hired Mary Clumpner as the town’s first full-time economic development coordinator. A full-time village engineer, Paul Pearson, was hired earlier this year.

Clumpner, who will begin work Dec. 1, is assistant village manager in Homewood. She also has worked as a village administrator and village treasurer in East Hazel Crest.

Village Administrator John Downs said Clumpner’s extensive work in business retention and promotion will be a plus for Mokena.

Downs said Clumpner will devote about 25 percent of her time to business retention, 60 percent to promotion of additional business development and the rest of her time to do research and write grants.

In other business, trustees awarded a $26,981 contract to Barton-Aschman Associates Inc. to conduct a transportation study.

The consultants’ work will include traffic counts, a survey and description of village roads and a forecast of future traffic needs, as well as suggestions for bicycle and pedestrian routes.

The plan is expected to be ready by June, Pearson said.
