A steering committee that will help Lincoln-Way High School officials campaign for a ballot measure to finance expansion was introduced to the school board last week.

The 15-member committee drawn from a cross-section of area residents will urge residents to support a $60 million request to be placed on the March 17 ballot.

The money would be used to enlarge Lincoln-Way’s freshman-sophomore East Campus in Frankfort and junior-senior Central Campus in New Lenox into two separate four-year high schools with athletic fields and swimming pools. The project also would include a new auditorium for the Central Campus.

Enrollment at the two campuses, which have a combined capacity of 5,000 students, now stands at more than 4,300, and school officials expect capacity will be exceeded within a few years.

The expansion plan and proposal were developed after more than a year of study by school officials and volunteer resident subcommittees.
