Officials in Maine Township District 207 are scheduled to act Monday on a proposal to add an extra semester of social science to the current roster of credits needed for graduation.

Under the proposal, the requirement of two years of social science would be increased to 2 1/2 years for the class of 2002.

“The basic flaw in our curriculum is that between 25 and 40 percent of our students don’t take a social science class during the first two years,” said Suzanne Millies, the district’s instruction director. She noted that the district’s three high schools offer, but do not require, social science studies before the junior year.
