Even in defeat, Johnsburg’s football team answered a few questions.

Carmel (8-3) ended the Skyhawks’ season with a 47-34 defeat in the second round of the 4A playoffs Friday night in Mundelein. But Johnsburg (9-2), which doesn’t belong to a conference, proved at the very least that it belongs in the playoffs.

“Everybody asked, `Can this team (Johnsburg) play with us,’ ” Carmel coach Mike Fitzgibbons said. “Obviously, they could. They took their best shot at us. I thought we would wear them down and we did.”

Carmel, behind the running of Jon Styx (135 yards, two touchdowns) and Jim Hanna (135 yards, three TDs), held a 31-14 lead at the start the fourth quarter and then fended off a late Johnsburg rally to advance to the third round.

Brandon Johnson recorded seven tackles and two sacks, and Dave Lawlor chipped in with five tackles to lead the Carmel defense.
