Steger Village President Lou Sherman said he will ask Crete Township officials whether they will subsidize participation by unincorporated township residents in Steger’s recreation program.

He agreed Monday to raise the issue with township officials in response to a request from a resident of the Steger Estates subdivision in unincorporated Crete Township.

But Sherman noted that Steger Estates residents attended the Sept. 15 Village Board meeting to affirm their interest in remaining in an unincorporated entity.

“They said, `We’re from Steger Estates, and we want nothing to do with the Village of Steger,’ ” he said.

Steger and South Chicago Heights recently established an arrangement under which residents of the respective villages pay the same out-of-pocket fee to participate in Steger recreation programs. Steger continues to levy an extra $40 out-of-district charge, but bills the South Chicago Heights government.
