After seasons of fruitlessly rifling through racks of boot-cut flared pants and hourglass jackets–they actually called these suits!–this year I finally said “Thank you, Donna Karan,” and plunked down my charge card for a fluid, lightweight, black wool suit with a long, three-button jacket and stovepipe trousers. Feminine power at its finest. So elegant, I thought. So tasteful.

So expensive!

Depending on where you roam on the economic range, a $1,000 suit is de rigueur or deranged. But with it I’ve now got three seasons of wear and loads of looks. With a white T-shirt, the suit goes sporty. With a vintage gold camisole, it’s black-tie-bound. Teamed with a crisp, white, collared shirt and ascot, it’s Euro chic.

But the real dividend belongs to my psyche, not my wardrobe. It’s the dramatic confidence boost inspired by the suit, not simply its tailoring, that turns heads and demands attention.

More than once a woman has passed me in my suit on the street and remarked, “You look good!”

And when a woman says it, she really means it.
