The City of Elmhurst probably will extend its subsidized transportation program for senior citizens and may broaden it to include people with disabilities, officials said Monday night.
Members of the City Council’s Public Affairs and Safety Committee said they want to extend the Range of Motion minibus program through March to allow more senior citizens to use it. Members said they would like to serve riders with disabilities.
Unlike the city’s subsidized taxi program with American Taxi–which does not transport senior citizens outside Elmhurst and which came under fire during a hearing earlier Monday when it was alleged that the firm has overcharged senior riders–Range of Motion has offered seniors door-to-door service in and outside Elmhurst for $1.50 a ride.
Range of Motion president John Lawlor said riders will pay $2 a ride in the city and $3 outside Elmhurst, and the program will cost the city about $16,000.
The program would be offered twice weekly for eight hours a day, officials said. Council members are expected to vote next week on the program’s extension.
