Empanadas, like the Spanish language, are treated with different accents all over Latin America. And while you may not find every version of this pastry-wrapped meal in Chicago, you can find quite a few of them. Last week, while trying Rancho Luna’s Cuban croquettas, we also sampled their toothsome dessert empanadas filled with guava paste and white cheese. But for savory ones, we really go for those at Logan Square’s Argentine eatery El Nandu and especially those from Empanadas Unlimited in Bucktown. There, Chilean chefs bake a sturdy but still tender golden shell around such fillings as spinach and cheese, beef and beans, beef, eggs and olives, shrimp and scallops, chicken and cheese, and zucchini. As tasty as these turnovers are, the real star of the show is the garlicky, cilantro-spiked pevre sauce served on the side. The owners keep its ingredients a secret. We don’t blame them.
