Established as a national park: Aug. 1, 1916, as part of Hawaii National Park; redesignated as Hawaii Volcanoes Sept. 22, 1961.

Area: 230,000 acres.

Visitors: 2,476,710 in 1996.

Location: Southeastern end of island of Hawaii (the “Big Island”).

Flora and fauna: Coconut palms, hapu`u and `ae ferns, fireweed, unique varieties of flowers and shrubs. There are several Hawaiian adaptations of songbirds, nene geese, rodents and insects; sea creatures include hawksbill turtle and humpback whale.

Entrance fees: $10 per vehicle for a seven-day permit, $5 for cyclists and pedestrians.
