Trustees this week authorized the village’s third special census in this decade.

An up-to-date census that reflects the village’s growth rate could boost New Lenox’s share of population-based revenues from the state by $180,000 a year, according to planning and development administrator Carrie Hansen.

Per capita revenues bring in about $92 per person.

“You want to get the most recent data (to calculate those revenues),” Hansen said.

The request for the head count must be filed with federal officials by Oct. 23 and the census has to be completed by June 1998.

The village population in a 1993 special census was 10,563, she said. In 1995 it was 12,692, and the town is still growing.

“We think we’re at 14,200 right now,” Hansen said.
