Mokena trustees voted Monday night to approve an amendment affecting the development of 14 acres of land at LaPorte and La Grange Roads that has been annexed by the village.

The amendment allows the developers to subdivide slightly more than 1 acre for construction of a bank. The owners of the site, Lagestee Mulder of South Holland, plan to turn the rest of the property into a shopping area.

The bank will be the first business to occupy the area, and it will be housed in a two-story Colonial-style building with a clock tower on the corner.

Trustee Ed Jancauskas said the clock tower will be an attractive entrance point for the village.

Trustee Mike Everett said he was concerned at first about the concept of developing only one part of the parcel. But, “Every project needs to take a first step,” he said in voting in favor of the amendment.

Developer Tad Lagestee said the company is talking with officials of grocery chains who might want to locate on the property.
