When Suzanne Locklear discovered she had cancer, a disease that had killed her grandmother, she didn’t have health insurance. The financial pressure created by medical bills cost the mother of three her home and ultimately her marriage. Frequent appointments for chemotherapy cost her her job.

Yet she didn’t despair. Known to friends for her delicious homemade dressings, Locklear bottled two flavors: a red wine vinaigrette and an oil-free honey mustard blend. Gourmet stores picked it up and now, four years later, she is poised to enter grocery stores with Suzanne’s Sensational Salad Dressings.

She was only 31 when she was initially diagnosed. “I was using visualization to get well. I got into exercise and eating well and I got well,” says Locklear, now 43.

With the dressings, “I wanted to show that there’s. . .life after diagnosis. I really bloomed. I found strength and character I didn’t know I had.”

Based in Boise, Idaho, the company funnels $1 per case to breast cancer charities. It also donates products to cancer patients and to breast cancer benefit runs like the Race for the Cure. Each bottle contains a hang-tag emblazoned with the symbolic pink ribbon and the slogan “Add life to every meal.”

Locklear, now happily remarried, hopes to pass on her positive attitude: “I hear from women a lot. . .that my story has helped their mental attitude.”

The salad dressings cost about $4 each in grocery stores; $5 by mail. Call 800-657-7449.
