Lincoln-Way High School board members are expected to vote Thursday on whether to cope with a growing enrollment by enlarging two schools or building a third.

At a work session last week, board members indicated they are ready to follow the results of a recent survey that showed residents overwhelmingly favor adding to Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort and Lincoln-Way Central in New Lenox rather than constructing a third building in Tinley Park.

At issue is how to come up with more space. With enrollment at more than 4,300, school officials predict the district will outgrow the 5,000-student combined capacity within a few years.

“My heart says that we will maintain a stronger academic program with two high schools than with three high schools,” board member James Gast said.

Board member Scott Reed noted the “overwhelming preference” among residents is for a two-school scenario.
