Paul Weller: Rather than dwelling on his past leading the Jam and Style Council, Paul Weller concentrated on his ’90s solo material during his Friday night performance at the Vic. Even so, the ingredients that marked his past bands were abundant during his fervent, nearly two-hour performance. Still (barely) under 40, Weller and his band mixed R&B, psychedelia, jazzy pop and slashing guitar rock, frequently punctuating songs with extended guitar jams With psychedelic projections swirling on a screen behind him and his backing trio, the only thing missing from the updated Mod-era vibe was Austin Powers himself. Unlike Powers, though, Weller proceeded with thunderous seriousness (there’s a reason his latest record is called “Heavy Soul”). Fortunately, soulfulness ultimately overcame weight, thanks to the piano boogie of “Stanley Road” and “sha-la-la” chorus of “Mermaids.”
